BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH - Sherlocked
Benedict Cumberbatch - Sherlocked - Sherlock Holmes role
Benedict Cumberbatch was spotted by Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue in the 2007 movie Atonement. They saw him and decided to ask him to do an audition for the series. It is one of the wonderful abilities of Sherlock Holmes that he’s able to make outstanding artists world famous. Benedict felt from the beginning that the character could bring him fame and he also liked the script. He started to diet, began to sauna and run regularly to fit the role perfectly. At first they shot with other hair (pilot), but soon his hair had been waves brown. According to some news he did not really like the colour change and he thought Sherlock’s style of hair was too feminine (it resembled the messy pixie look). He liked to work in the series and told that there had always been a good and friendly vibe during shootings. He also said that he would gladly play the detective again. In 2010 he made an audiobook, he read Sherlock Holmes: The Rediscovered Railway Mysteries and Other Stories by John Taylor. In 2014 he designed the Sherlock Paddington Bear.
As we mentioned on this page, Benedict and Conan Doyle are relatives, and when the actor was a child he watched the outstanding Granada series with Jeremy Brett at his nan’s in Brighton. We do not know whether he read the whole Canon, but it was not really necessary, because the BBC’s sleuth differs much from the canonical character. In the same manner Henry Cavill did not needed to be familiar with the Canon to play Sherlock in Enola Holmes. But it is well-known that Benedict likes to read. His opinion is: „People forget about books. They’re always just turning on the television, but reading a good book is the most nourishing thing you can do.”
